Meghalaya


Meghalaya, or “Abode of the Clouds” is the home of the Khasi, Jaintia and the Garo tribes. It is bounded by Assam in the north and the east and the plains of Bangladesh in the south and west. The State is divided into three hilly regions - the Garo Hills (Western Meghalaya), the Khasi Hills (Central Meghalaya) and the

Jaintia Hills (Eastern Meghalaya). Great stone Monoliths erected to the old tribal kings can be found in the Khasi and the Jaintia hills as well as the sacred forest groves.

Besides being the home of 300 varieties of Orchids, Meghalaya is rich in wildlife; its gentle hills are interspersed with rich meadows and pine forests.

The places to visit in Meghalaya are :

Shillong : Also described as the ‘Scotland of the East’, it is a beautiful hill station and the capital of Meghalaya. Surrounded by pine trees and veiled in clouds at an altitude of 1496m, Shillong provides a welcome relief from the heat of the plains. The main attractions of Shillong are the Ward’s lake, Lady Hydari Park, Sweet Falls, Bishop and Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls. From Shillong Peak, one can have a breathtaking view of the town below.

Cherrapunjee : Once world renowned for being the wettest place in the world,

Cherrapunjee is 54 kms from Shillong. Nohkailikai Falls, the world’s fourth highest waterfall and Nohsngithiang Falls, Krem Mawmluh cave here are worth visiting.

Mawphlang : The vast floral wealth makes Mawphlang, 24 kms from Shillong a great attraction for the nature lovers. The sacred forest here has spiritual significance and is held in great veneration. It also represents one of the earliest attempts to preserve the ancient eco-system.

Jakrem : 64 kms from Shillong, it is famous for its hot springs.

 

Nartiang :The ancient seat of the Jaintia kings Nartiang (65 kms from Shillong) was a lot of famous Jaintia stone memorials (monoliths).

Mawsynram : 55 kms near Cherrapunjee, it is the wettest place on earth. It is also reputed for its stalagmite and stalactite caves.

Nongkhnum Island : It is the biggest river Island in Meghalaya and the second biggest

Island in Asia after Majuli in Assam. This enchanting place with its thick forest, grassland, waterfalls and beautiful lakes makes it worth visiting.

Thadlaskein Lake : This lake is 56 kms from Shillong. This historic lake was dug with the ends of the bows and is a beautiful spot for outing, boating and picnic.

Syndai : An important village of the Jaintia hills which is famous for a number of caves and caverns in the limestone-borne area.
